Back by popular demand (not really, I just love doing these!) – the next edition of Hilarious Duolingo Phrases!
This week, we’re diving into the world of different languages.
I’m a Duolingo addict. I’m currently ‘learning’ 6 different languages, 3 of them on a regular basis.
So I thought it would be fun to ask my Instagram community if they had come across any other funny ones.
Here are the results!
German
Let’s begin with the language I know best – German.
Mögen Sie Musik, oder Jazz?
Do you like music or Jazz?
Because everyone knows Jazz isn’t real music.
What’s the difference between a rock guitarist and a jazz guitarist? A rock guitarist plays 3 chords for 10,000 people. A jazz guitarist plays 10,000 chords for 3 people.
Hilfe, ich werde gegessen!
Help, I am being eaten!
If you have read my previous posts on this subject, you’ll know I fully buy into the conspiracy theory that Duolingo is a serial killer.
This adds to that theory.
Die dicken Kinder essen Pizza.
The fat children eat Pizza.
Nope. Not standing for this one.
- We don’t body shame here, Duo.
- Pizza is delicious, why would you judge anyone for eating pizza?
Die Augen brennen.
The eyes are burning.
French
Vous prenez des Bières pour le petit-déjeuner.
You have beers for breakfast
Who’s to judge during these *unprecedented* times?
Il voit son verre vide et il devient triste.
He sees his empty glass and becomes sad.
Seriously though, has anyone checked on the French? I’m worried about the amount of alcohol related content featured in their Duolingo course…
Norwegian
Jeg er osten.
I am the cheese.
Correct. I am THE cheese.
Jeg ser etter en jente med jobb og bil.
I am looking for a girl with a job and a car.
Hold up, I thought Norway was supposed to be one of the most gender equal countries in the world?
Get your own job and car ya freeloading owl!
Jeg spiser brød og gråt på gulvet.
I am eating bread and crying on the floor.
The perfect 2020 phrase. So 2020, in fact, that Duolingo made it into a limited edition Tote bag.
Dutch
Wat doet jouw stiefmoeder met de appel?
What does your step-mother do with the apple?
I’ve seen enough Disney movies to know exactly what she’s doing with the apple.
De kale man houdt von haar.
The bald man loves hair.
Duo is out here throwing shade at anyone and everyone right now.
Welsh
Mae Dylan wedi colli ei enaid e.
Dylan has lost his soul.
Haven’t we all in 2021?
Dw i draig.
I am a dragon.
Ah yes, the first words out of every Welsh mouth.
Mae clwb nos owen yn gwerthu pannas.
Owen’s nightclub is selling parsnips.
There is a surprising amount of parsnip content in the Duolingo Welsh course…
Wales is a land famous for it’s love of leeks, but parsnips? Not so sure.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of Hilarious Duolingo Phrases.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve learned any funny or strange phrases!
I love it! I’m finding the Welsh particularly hilarious, from dragon playing a major part in all of life, to the leeks, and everyone answering “terrible” whenever they’re asked how they are.
